Travelling To South Kalimantan

South Kalimantan, This province has a population of around 3.45 million and continues to grow rapidly. It is mostly a flat area with deep rich forests and swamp lands. However there are also some great peaks, for example the Meratus Mountains in the south-west to the north-east of the province. The highest peak is Gunung Besar at 1,892 metres.

Welcome to Bandjermasin or Bandjarmasin the capital of South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The city sits on a delta island near the junction of the Barito and Martapura rivers. To the locals it is better known as the “River City”. Today the population stands around 800,000.

To get here : By air, Syamsudin Noor Airport, located about 25 km outside the town. By sea, the port called Trisakti Harbour. This area is the gateway to many destinations and it has built up over the years through the shipping industry, exporting rubber, timber, coal, gold, diamonds, rubies, pepper and petroleum.

So what to expect, a busy city with a great naval history which was key to different kingdoms and countries at different periods in history.

Things to do and see : Mesjid Raya Sabilal Muhtadin. Banjarmasin is around 96% Moeslim and this Mosque is the second largest in Indonesia and in itself it is its own tourist attraction with tour buses arriving daily to see its splendor.

Shopping. Yes you heard it, diamonds, rubies and all that glitters. You will find jewelry stores with all your heart desires.

The Floating Marketplace. For us, this is the main attraction, you can walk canals and even partake in a cruise up and down the canal streets and investigate the local produce at the floating marketplaces.

Pulau Kembang & Pulau Kaget. Jump on a boat taxi and a short time later you will find yourself on Pulau Kembang & Pulau Kaget, Flower Island & Surprised Shocked Island, with the long-tailed Macaque monkeys and Probosic monkeys. Great fun for the kids and a true family activity.
