Padang Bai has just recently found itself on the path of the backpacker as this is the place where most travelers jump on a ferry for Lombok.
If you have the time, it is a great place to unpack your bags and soak up the village atmosphere Padang Bai has to offer. There isn’t really much going on here apart from a few dive operations and snorkeling but it really is a place to unwind and get away from the hustle and bustle of Kuta.
The main beach here also operates as a harbour for the numerous fishing boats however you can easily find a spot of sand to lounge away the days. The water here is very calm and you can easily enjoy a swim in this natural harbour.
If you don’t want this, then there is another beach, (Blue Lagoon) which is a five minute walk over the hill. Here you will find a small “warung” that will cook you Indonesian dishes as well as western meals. There are sun loungers here, however make sure the tide isn’t coming in or you may get wet. Be careful as the currents on this beach can be very strong and there are no life guards.
The main activity of course is fishing and if you are a seafood lover, this is definitely the place to be. There are a good handful of great seafood restaurants on the main street that will cook you anything from Lobster to Barracuda.
You won’t have any difficulty finding accommodation and all places are within walking distance of each other so look around and check out what suits you best. You will find mid to low range accommodation here.
Padang Bai really is a stop off before venturing onto Lombok although it is definitely worth a few nights to refresh yourself before moving on.
