Bangka is a wonderfully attractive island with great beaches and is ideally located to quickly escape the hustle and bustle of Palembang. It has a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere and acts as a first stop in island hopping to Belitung just 80 kms south.
Bangka is relatively overshadowed by its sister island, Belitung. This being said the beaches are beautiful however the island itself is not being promoted as much as Belitung thus resulting in a poorer tourist infrastructure. The main throng of tourists here are mainly domestic yet there are hopes to increase tourism from neighboring Singaporeans and Malaysians.
Getting here is relatively easy from Palembang as there are high-speed ferries departing from Boom Baru, which is located just 2 kms from Palembang city centre. You will arrive by ferry at the port of Mentok on Bangka. This port is located in the north east of the island and it is here (the north east coast) where you will find some of the best beaches the island has to offer. The bus station is very close to the ferry port and its here where you will jump on a bus to your final destination. Inform the driver of your accommodation and he will probably drop you off outside your hotel.
The place you need to head to from Mentok is Sungailiat. There is a good range of accommodation and the beaches are within easy access of the town. 32 kms further south is the main town of Bangka – Pangkalpinang. It takes around 3 – 4 hours to reach from Mentok and is a pleasant enough town with a very laid back atmosphere. It is just outside this town where you can board Hydro foils to Belitung and even Jakarta. Pangkal Balam Port is located 4 kms south of Pangkalpinang.
